People
The permanent population is only 9,500, although this rises to 30,000 in summer. There is a high proportion of expats living here on a permanent basis, and the area is very popular with affluent retirees. The majority of visitors are a mixture of Spanish, German, English, French and Dutch.
Moraira’s roots as a fishing village have not changed much, and today the fishermen still go out in the early hours each day, bringing back a fresh catch which is sold by auction at the traditional fish market, one of the most popular in the Costa Blanca region. Moraira is also famous for the growing of Muscatel grapes for wine making.
Club Náutico
Built in 1985, the Moraira Club Náutico has become one of the main nautical attractions of the Valencian Community and was one of the first to achieve the Blue Flag distinction for the cleanest shorelines in Europe.
Moraira is also seen as a culinary destination. Every year in December 11 restaurants organize together with the municipality a Gourmet week with international chefs, show cookings etc. Three restaurants are listed in Gourmetour (The Spanish Michelin Guide) being: Ca Pepe, Le Dauphin and La Sort.
This makes Moraira very appealing to people who are into quality food of the Michelin star agenda as such a small place has three fantastic restaurants.
Tourism
The economy of Moraira is built around tourism. Little remains of the fishing cottages that once made up the little port that serviced the town of Teulada that stands at the head of the valley. To preserve its natural beauty, the Teulada council passed laws protecting the abundant pine trees and limited the height of buildings. The resulting development blended villas into the scenery creating a hamlet that retained the
Beaches In Moraira
Teulada Moraira has some of the finest beaches along the Costa Blanca. From soft, sandy beaches ideal for children, to rocky coves and inlets enjoyed by snorkelers and scuba divers, to a wide range of water-sports for the more active tourist.
Teulada Moraira is also blessed with having some of the cleanest beaches in Spain. With blue-flag status, they have a wide range of options available to suit all budgets and requirements.
The list below details the beaches along the Teulada Moraira coast:
La Cala Beach
La Cala is a small rocky beach, with the most crystal clear waters on the Costa Blanca. Best accessed by boat, although a beautiful walk along the cliff path can also take you to the beach, it is located at the most northerly point of the Teulada Moraira coast. It is an excellent beach for a quite afternoon on a sun-lounger reading your favourite holiday novel.
El Portet Beach
Moving South, the next beach is at El Portet Moraira. It is a wide and shallow cove with a gentle sloping beach: 50 feet out from the shoreline, the water will just be lapping at your knees. The shallow beach and lack of waves make this a firm favourite for young children. Situated directly behind the beach, is a modern restaurant catering for all tastes. It serves great fresh fish and a wide-range of refreshing, cooling drinks.
For the real food fan, El Portet Moraira has a two-star Michelin restaurant: Le Dauphin. It is an absolute must for an early evening meal, sat on the terrace above the beach, enjoying a crisp Chardonnay as you take in the view across the stunning bay while, in the distance, the sun sets dramatically behind the mighty Penon d’Ifach rock.
El Portet Moraira is located a five-minute drive from the centre of Moraira. With great facilities and ample car-parking, it is an excellent choice for a great day out.
Playa L’Ampolla Beach
Next along the Teulada Moraira coast is Playa D’Ampolla. One of the four Moraira beaches awarded a blue flag award. In keeping with the blue flag standards, the Playa D’Ampolla is kept exceptionally clean and tidy. It is a golden, sandy beach and is the largest and most popular beach in Teulada Moraira.
Families love it for its soft and golden sand, sunbathers love it for its wide and deep expanse and water enthusiasts love it for its array of sporting facilities. Amongst its facilities, it has a great beach-bar, loungers and umbrellas, showers and bathroom facilities and is patrolled by Red Cross lifeguards.
Platgetes Beach
Further along the coast is Platgetes, which comprises two small beaches: one is shallow, with golden sand, whilst the other is rocky with an abundance of small, sea-life swimming in its inlets and coves: great for young children to explore.
A promenade links the two beaches and provides excellent photo opportunities. The beaches are equipped with a parking area, a restaurant and a Red Cross platform where a life-guard keeps a safe watch across the beaches.
L’Andrago Beach
At the most southerly point of the Teulada Moraira coast is the last beach: L’Andrago. It is a pebble-beach, with large boulders dotted here and there: ideal for laying out a towel, lying back and topping up your tan.
The coves and inlets at the edges of the beach are an excellent location to practice your scuba-diving and snorkeling. Famous, locally for being a very quiet beach, it is the perfect location for a quiet afternoon of relaxing, stress-free sunbathing. Additionally, parking is available and a number of small restaurants are just a five-minute walk away.
